BOATBUILDING IN BYXELKROK

In Byxelkrok and along the Böda coast, a skilled boatbuilding tradition developed. Boats were built specifically for the conditions of the Baltic Sea – light, sturdy and well suited to both fishing and transport.

Particularly well known were the post boats (postsnipor) from Böda, used to carry mail and goods along the coast. They crossed the open sea to Gotland, sudden changes in weather, and long distances – requiring both excellent craftsmanship and considerable seamanship. The snipor operated in the Baltic Sea from the 18th century until 1858.

In simple workshops, boatbuilders worked with axes, hand planes, and simpel hand tools. Each boat was built by hand, often following traditions passed down through generations.

Boatbuilding was an integral part of life in Byxelkrok – where the sea both provided livelihoods and demanded skill.
